  15. Alpha Bah says:

    A’Lelia,
My 9 year old daughter is doing a report on Famous African Americans that will or have made an impact in choosing her future career. Like any youngster, she has shown superficial interest in many fields; from a Doctor, to an Artist, or musical instrument player. You name it, and she had flirted with the idea. However, the life of the daughter of former slaves turning into self-mad entrepreneur caught my daughter’s eye. She chose to do her report on Madame C.J. Walker, not because of the rags to riches chronicle, but because of the obstacles, the determination and the will to do it “On Her Own Ground”. We love this site and all the links you have mentioned in some of your comments. What a great story of inspiration.

I read Madame CJ Walker bio. and i could not find were she opened a beauty academy in Dallas, Texas; so is that a false statement???????

    • A'Lelia Bundles says:

      Dear Keaira Hicks,
Thanks for visiting our website. Yes, there was a Madam Walker Beauty School in Dallas, but it was opened many years after Madam Walker died. The building where the school was located is still standing in Dallas, but the school closed in the 1960s.

    Tyler Montaigne
    Statesville, NC

    • A'Lelia Bundles says:

      Hello Tyler,
Thanks for visiting our Web site. I’m glad you found it helpful. One way you might consider organizing your material is into the following categories that represent the many dimensions of Madam Walker’s life: entrepreneur, hair care industry pioneer, philanthropist, anti-lynching activist, patron of the arts and advocate for women’s rights. You could include a fact about each category. You also might consider taking three or four of her quotations from the “Madam Walker Bio” and including a photo with each quotation.

  33. Did you know that Madam Walker played a pivotal role in helping to elevate the issue of equal rights for African-Americans onto an international stage.

“The National Race Congress selected civil rights activist Reverend William H. Jernagin as their envoy, and the International League of Darker People elected Madam C.J. Walker, Marcus Garvey and Reverend Adam Clayton Powell Sr., as delegates to attend the conference France. “The National Race Congress elected civil rights advocate Rev. William H. Jernigan its representative to the peace conference. The International League of Darker Peoples emerged. The league was born on January 2,1919 at the Hudson River Estate of black businesswoman C.J. Walker. Principals included Walker, Marcus Garvey, socialist A. Philip Randolph, and Harlem community leader Rev. Adam Clayton Powell Sr. Its primary purpose was to help the plethora of black groups make coherent demands at Versailles”

    • A'Lelia Bundles says:

Thanks, Ms. Johnson, for visiting our site. Yes, I discovered the information about Madam Walker’s participation with the ILDP about twenty years ago while doing research for my book, On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker. I include quite a bit of information about the organization and its members based on Madam Walker’s personal correspondence and research at the National Archives and in historical black newspapers. What makes Madam Walker’s life interesting to me is, in fact, her interest in politics, culture and the arts.
I hope you’ll have a chance to read On Her Own Ground.

  34. Sara says:

Hi my name is Alita and I am doing a report on Madam C.J. Walker. She has been my shero. The reason why I say this is when I was in the second grade I had to do a report on her and I always wanted to go into some type of cosmetic feild. Well now I am a current student at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School and I am taking cosmetology and this is my senior year. Once again I decided to do a project on her and this time it is more detailed and I have read two of your books. I have been very excited to come across her work in our cosmo books. I hope that this shows you that people love your great great grandmother.

  39. Eddie Henry says:

Thank You so much for posting this valuable history. The home is so beautiful. I just have one complaint. You don’t talk about the pipe organ in the home enough. Im an organists and I would love more detail. You dont even have a piece on this website of it being played so we can hear what it sounds like! Why is that? Home Pipe Organ installations of the early 20th century were status symbols of the rich. Whether they were Skinner, Aeolian, Moller, or Estey pipe organs. PLEASE POST this organ being played and post the schematics of the organ and pictures of the pipes and chambers and console. The organ is the SOUL of the home. In the video of this home it was described as her PRIZED possession. Please post more on the organ and it being played. Im sure its sound beautiful.

    • A'Lelia Bundles says:

      Dear Mr. Henry,
Thank you very much for visiting our website. I agree with you that Villa Lewaro is a beautiful home. I truly wish we could post audio of the organ, but it hasn’t been in working condition for many years. I do talk more about the organ in my book, On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker. I also have spoken with a protegee of the famous organist, Melville Charlton, who played the organ on visits to the home.
      Best wishes,

I am a hair care professional that has been inspired for many years by Madam Walker. Her courage is evident, even to this day. My respect is tremendous, she has paved the way for millions. The Spirit of Tenacity that she embodied lives in many of us today. I would like to personally thank you for this site. When ever challenges come along, it is a great source of encouragement. Because she could accomplish her goals at that time in our history, I have no excuse or reason for not accomplishing mine.

  41. Alyssa Bracha McMillan says:

    Hello A’Lelia,

I came across this website after doing research for my own interest. It is great that you have website to let individuals know the facts of Madam C.J. Walker – because not all sources are correct. Just recently I stumbled across a magazine from the 30′s or 40′s called Glamour Parade, with Lena Horne on the front cover. On the bottom of the magazine it says… Presented Through The Courtesy Of The Mme. C.J. Walker Manufacturing Co. Inside it is marketing her products and has pictures of other notable black stars such as: Marion Anderson, Marva Louis, The Jones Brothers, and more! At the end it has a picture of the headquarters (which at that time it was $1,000,000,00) also a picture and Bio of Madam C.J Walker, as well as a picture and short caption of A’Lelia. I thought this was VERY interesting and I am happy I came across it. I wish you well.

    Thank you!

    Alyssa

    • A'Lelia Bundles says:

      Dear Alyssa,
Thanks so much for visiting our website and for sharing the magazine article you found. The Walker Company had a wonderful historical association with many of our great entertainers and entrepreneurs. We’re always thrilled that people still are inspired by Madam Walker’s legacy. Today we keep her story alive through our Madam Walker Family Archives (the largest private collection of Walker photos, business records, letters, furniture, clothing and personal artifacts), through our books and speeches and through the Madam Walker Theatre Center, a National Historic Landmark in Indianapolis.
      All best wishes,
      A’Lelia
